Stepping Up Sleep Hygiene

Sleeping well requires an investment in sleep hygiene, a set of practices surrounding the use of one's bed, bedroom, and body. Those having trouble sleeping can often improve their sleep with a few specific adjustments.

Treating a bed as a dedicated place to sleep assists in sleeping. A bed should be as comfortable as possible, to encourage good sleep, as should the bedding and pillows. Despite this comfort, however, a bed should only be used for sleeping, as this trains the brain to expect to sleep while in bed.

In addition, bedrooms should be kept cool and dark. Blocking out heat and sunlight makes it easier to sleep, especially in cities and suburbs where light pollution is common.

The optimal amount of sleep is around 7.5 hours for most people, but not everyone needs exactly this much sleep. The amount of time one sleeps each night should be as consistent as possible while remaining restful.
